Ilias Pechlivanidis is a Senior Researcher in Hydrology and Water Resources at SMHI. He is also acting as the Project Manager of the Analytics and Dissemination Centre of Copernicus EMS-Floods, the Co-Chair of the HEPEX scientific initiative, the Chair of the EGU Hydrological Forecasting sub-division, a Reference Member of the CNDS centre, and an EO Evangelist of the FIRE forum. 

Biography

Dr Ilias G. Pechlivanidis obtained a first class degree in Environmental Engineering in 2005 from the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, and worked part-time as a fluid mechanics researcher in the Laboratory of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He pursued his interest in hydrology at Imperial College London, UK, and obtained a PhD in 2009. Ilias later joined Victoria University of Wellington as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Hydrology and Water Resources developing robust model diagnostics rooted in information theory for hydrological modelling.

In 2012, Ilias was appointed Senior Researcher at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) Hydrology Research & Development unit. Since Oct. 2017, he has been leading the scientific efforts on forecasting of water variables, whilst since Feb. 2018 he has been the Co-Chair of the HEPEX (Hydrological Ensemble Prediction Experiment) international initiative setting an engaged scientific effort on improving hydrological forecasting and counting more than 600 members. Since 2018 Ilias is also the Project Manager of the Analytics and Dissemination Center of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service on Floods providing early hydrological warning services to European and global partners. He is also the Chair of the EGU Hydrological Forecasting sub-division, a Reference Member at the Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science (CNDS), and the first Earth Observation Evangelist for the agriculture sector of the FIRE forum
