Ilias Pechlivanidis is SMHI's Scientific Leader in Forecasting of the Water Variables and Senior Researcher in Hydrology and Water Resources. He is also the Project Manager of the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) Dissemination Center, and the Co-Chair of the Hydrologic Ensemble Prediction EXperiment (HEPEX) initiative.

Dr Ilias G. Pechlivanidis obtained a first class degree in Environmental Engineering in 2005 from the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, and worked part-time as a fluid mechanics researcher in the Laboratory of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He pursued his interest in hydrology at Imperial College London, UK, and obtained a PhD in 2009. Ilias later joined Victoria University of Wellington as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Hydrology and Water Resources developing robust model diagnostics rooted in information theory for hydrological modelling.

In 2012, Ilias was appointed Senior Researcher at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) Hydrology Research & Development unit. Since Oct. 2017, he has been leading the scientific efforts on forecasting of water variables, whilst since Feb. 2018 he has been the Co-Chair of the HEPEX international initiative setting an engaged scientific effort on improving hydrological forecasting and counting more than 450 members. Since 2018 Ilias is also the Project Manager of the EFAS Dissemination Center providing early hydrological warning service to European partners. His current research activities focus on hydrological forecasting at different time ranges, impact-based (user-tailored) forecasting and communication, data assimilation in operational hydrological services, process understanding of river systems under uncertainty, and environmental (climate, land use, population) change impacts on water resources.

Ilias also acts as Associate Editor on Hydrology and Water Resources for the Global NEST journal. He is also a Guest Editor in the Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) journal.
