Next decade's vision for hydrological predictions

20/05/2025

I have been honored to lead a community-based article published in BAMS (the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society) presenting the next decade's vision to enhance research-to-operations (R2O) hydrological predictions across scales and time horizons.

This paper is the result of an international collaboration through the HEPEX (a global community in hydrological ensemble prediction), building on 20 years of advancing hydrological ensemble prediction.

We identify key scientific priorities to evolve hydrological forecasting systems and highlight how these innovations contribute directly to the UN Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative. Specifically we cover:

(1) AI/ML for predictive enhancement and communication
(2) Impact-based forecasting and system evaluation
(3) Probabilistic modelling and uncertainty quantification
(4) Operational implementation and global collaboration

🌍 This is a valuable article to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, aiming to shape the future of hydrological predictions and water-related early warning systems.
